Remember Josh Hamilton, the first round pick of the Devil Rays way back when before he had all sorts of drug problems? The Cubs took him today in the Rule 5 draft, and Baseball America is reporting he'll be dealt to the Reds for cash. Interesting to say the least. Also, the team took Jared Burton, a AA reliever from Oakland: http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/B/Jared-Burton.shtml

Interesting acquisition. He's injured, so they can stash him on the DL for quite a while. Knee surgery.
He does have tremendous upside though, and might make Votto into a key part of a trade at the deadline in '07.

The major league phase is over, as is the AAA. I think they are in AA right now.
No list posted for the AAA phase yet.

Terrible drug problems and a longshot at best. This kid had all kinds of talent, but it comes with a boatload of baggage.

In the AAA phase:
15. Reds: Francisco Mateo, lhp, Blue Jays
In the AA phase:
3. Reds: Nick Moran, rhp, Devil Rays
both are projects, but with good k/9 numbers. I think Krivsky is looking for power arms.

MLB.com's site is so pathetic. I can't find anything that gives real time updates on the draft (unless it's in the paid service). Where are you able to get the info?

From Marc's blog:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Reds have acquired former No. 1 overall pick Josh Hamilton from the Cubs, who was taken by Chicago from Tampa Bay in the Rule 5 draft.
Reds also selected RHP (Levi) Jared Burton from Oakland.
UPDATE: Krivsky said the deal with Chicago was prearranged and it's for cash considerations.
Wayne on Hamilton:
"There's risk to everything you do. Nothing ventured, nothing gained."
Krivsky said Jerry Narron's brother, Johnny, coached Hamilton in an amateur league in North Carolina.
"We feel it's worth the gamble."
Hamilton obviously has amazing talent, but a history of drug abuse makes the 1999 No. 1 overall pick a very interesting story.
When someone said something to Wayne about Hamilton having "a little power" Wayne jumped back and said, "a little power?"
"We think there's a lot still there."
Hamilton came off suspension on June 1, 2006 and was fully reinstated on June 30. He then went to the short season New York-Penn League and played in 15 games, batting .260 (13-for-50) with 3 doubles, a triple, and 5 RBI. He didn't play after July 29 because of a knee injury. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Aug. 11.
----
Scott Nethery on Burton: "We'll get him into camp and make some adjustments and see if he can't be a guy in the middle of our bullpen."
Nethery said Burton hits 93-94 with a slider and a cutter.
Burton pitched last season in Class AA Midland, where he was 6-5 with a 4.14 ERA.
----
UPDATE 2: Hamilton:
"When I got the news I started shaking because I was so excited."
"Jerry (Narron) saw me catch and pitch in one game. I remember him being at the game and being in awe and knowing who he was."
"I guarantee I'll come in in the best shape of my life."
"I didn't think (the Devils Rays) thought that anyone would take a chance." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I see the Hamilton pick up as similar to the Luke Prokopec pick. Little risk, possible big gain. As you noted, he'll go on the DL while he rehabs. We'll see. While Prokopec didn't work out, it has given us a scouting presence down under, as I recall.

More from Hamilton. "I hadn't been out there the last three years," said Hamilton, who served two years on a Major League Baseball-imposed drug-related suspension but played briefly at short-season Hudson Valley this season, going 13-for-50. His season there ended early due to a left knee injury, and Hamilton said the knee feels fine, though he said the best indication was when he dragged a deer out of the woods after a successful recent hunt.
"I think (a change of scenery) could help," Hamilton said. "I'll be a little nervous because it's a new group of guys to get to know . . . "
The best tidbit from Hamilton's interview came when he was asked about jumping from A-ball to the major leagues: "I'm not really concerned. Baseball has never been the problem . . . I've been working out, and I can guarantee I will be in the best shape of my life when spring training comes."
