I guess there's always the trade bait factor. MLB seems to be trending toward hott prospect trade bait.
Can't trade him for a year, though.

Just read through BA's little blurb on Yonder Alonso. Because it is paid material, I cannot post it, but they do say that Alonso is a better-than-average defensive 1B and has an excellent K/BB ratio.
I could be happy with this pick if we didn't have Joey Votto at 1B.

Oh yeah, I mean in a few years when he's particularly hott. I doubt the Reds think this way, at least not entirely, and I don't think they should. But it's a comforting thought to me when I think of what else a draft pick like this could mean.

I don't loathe the pick; I just would have rather had Beckham. Very good hitters who play well up-the-middle are an absolute luxury, and I think that's what Beckham projects to be.
That much said, I do think Alonso will rake at the big league level.
I wonder what the Reds' plans are for Todd Frazier. They've been playing him all over the damn place in Sarasota. Left field, third base, first base, only two games at shortstop though.

Interesting report on the defense. MLB.com has a little different take on it: "He's adequate at first, with decent hands that allow him to catch what's right at him. Range: He has average range, fine for his position."

Cardinals pick Brett Wallace. That's a player I would have liked to have had. Even though he's built like a fire hydrant (just saw footage of him for the first time ever).

The one bad thing about Alonso is his running. Believe it or not, he MAY be as bad as Sean Casey. I watched a video of him running, and I first thought it was ion slow motion!

One other thing the guys on ESPN mentioned is that Yonder Alonso was going to be an expensive sign, and commended the Reds from not shying away from signability issues. So, with the earlier signing of the kid out of Latin America, and Alonso, the Reds will be forking over some green to these guys.
Also discovered that the Reds had shown an interest in Yonder Alonso out of high school. So they must have been watching this guy for 3-4 years.

I like his first name. I can hear it now when someone spots him from a distance, "Look, Yonder Alonso."
