Here are more details on the trade from Rosenthal
Quote
Manny Ramirez has been traded to the Dodgers in a three-team blockbuster, pending the approval of the commissioner's office, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.

Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.
The Red Sox will pay all of the approximately $7 million remaining on Ramirez's contract.

From Trent:

Jocketty on the Junior trade:
Quote

From the conference call:

Kenny Williams contacted Jocketty yesterday about noon, they completed the agreement by the end of the Reds' game, but then it was up to Griffey and Brian Goldberg. That was completed this morning.

Williams approached them first.

As for if it had anything to do with the Brantley incident: "No, absolutely not."

Here's what I thought was the most interesting response, when asked about this impacting Dunn's future:

"It gives us an opportunity to look at what our future can be, bring Jerry Hairston back a day early. Move Jay Bruce to right, Dunn in left and see how that outfield makeup works as we evaluate our club for the future."

Jocketty said he was surprised when the White Sox called.

He also said there were other talks, but nothing that fit and he was surprised there was relatively little mvoement league-wide.

As for the two players, he said they were both guys he'd liked for a while, and they'd watched Richar when he was in Arizona's system.

Also, Masset will start in the bullpen, but could also start.

"Intitally we’ll use him as a reliever. We don’t’ have a lot of depth at pitching. If we had something happen to one of our starters, with Thompson and Maloney at AAA, it gives us more depth."

Looks like the Pirates ended up getting the best deal of the day for Bay.

Hairston in CF. Oh boy. Let's hand the CF job to the guy with a career sub .700 OPS who plays suspect defense.

Chris Dickerson should get a crack at the CF job.

Move of the day

Yahoo.com

WASHINGTON (TICKER) —The Washington Nationals on Thursday acquired shortstop Alberto Gonzalez from the New York Yankees for righthander Johnny Nunez.

Considered an above-average defensive player, Gonzalez showed very little with the bat in two different stints with the Yankees this season, batting .071 (1-for-14) in 12 games.

Gonzalez, 25, was hitting .247 with one homer and 35 RBI in 106 games at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He is expected to join the Nationals on Friday and be in uniform for their game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Nunez, 22, split this season between Class A Potomac and Class AA Harrisburg, going a combined 2-8 with a 4.85 ERA.

Jocketty said the Reds had a chance to make more deals but chose not to because they want to win as many games as possible. Awesome. Winning 78 games instead of 74 is soooooo important.

Attaining a better level of mediocrity is very important.

If the best offer for Dunn was the ones reported then I'm glad we held.
